Sid Guna and Justin Wong are the 2017 WSOP Sydney Teams Event Champions! - $27,138
Posted Wed, 13 Dec 2017 3:43am
There are few things more amazing for a poker player than winning a WSOP title. Perhaps the only thing that is better than that is doing it with your friends. That is certainly what has happened here tonight. Not only have Sid Guna and Justin Wong formed an amazing team together to take home this title but there close friends in the poker community were here to cheer them on every step of the way!
This is the first WSOP Gold Ring for both Guna and Wong, but for Wong, his joy is mixed in with a small bit of fear.
"This is the first time I have played a Teams Event with Sid," Wong told the Star Poker Live Reporting Team. "I normally play with my girlfriend and I might be in a bit of trouble getting this result without her."
The comment was made in jest but obviously made in jest but regardless, Whilst we have never met Wong's girlfriend we are quite sure all will be forgiven when he walks in the door with a WSOP Title, an exclusive Gold Ring and his share of the $27,138 first prize.
His teammate, Sid Guna, explained that the win was just a process of cutting everything down into bite-size pieces.
"At first we just wanted to get a jacket," Guna told us, referring to the very stylish jackets awarded to all players who make the final table.
"Then when we made the final table we thought it would be really cool to be top three. Then when we were heads up we said let's go for it and see what happens."
What happened was a fantastic display of poker. Wong is a tournament player and Guna a cash game player and the two used their unique set of skills to put together a force to be reckoned with at this event.
It wasn't easy though, their heads up opponents Matthew Pongrass and Mark Fester are well known on the local Sydney circuit and have an impressive list of results. Declan Russell was at the final table with his partner, Robert Liu, they have put some impressive results together later and should certainly be marked down as players to watch. Another player we have been watching for year's is Todor Kondevski, he played with his wife Nada and they made the final table together, falling agonisingly short.
Jimmy Briggs Jr and Kayci Hill are also well known as mainstays of the Sydney poker scene. It was a hand against these two which Champion Justin Wong puts down as a crucial turning point in the tournament.
"The hand against Jimmy (Briggs Jr) where we had and we had and he flopped top pair and we made a straight on the river. That was the turning point. We should have been gone there but we survived."
They didn't just survive, they prospered, all the way to their first WSOP title. Guna is already through to Day 2 of the Main Event and Wong will look to qualify through the flights held at the end of this week. Perhaps that will lead to another shot at WSOP glory in the $2 Million Guaranteed Main Event, and perhaps Wong will invite his girlfriend this time!

What do you mean no breaks?
Posted Tue, 12 Dec 2017 6:30pm
As we have teams of two alternating, there are no breaks in the Teams Event. The levels keep rolling on and on.
Great news for the players, but spare a thought for the poor, over-worked tournament reporters...
As there is no break for late registration to end it ends after level four, which should be approximately 8:15.
How it all works

Each team starts with 10,000 chips.
The first player sits with 5,000. If he busts out the second player comes in with the second 5,000.
If the first player survives the first level then the second player comes in for level two and adds his 5,000 to whatever player 1 has gotten their start stack to.
Team members then alternate each level until they either bust or are crowned WSOP Champions!
Go Team!
